South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI), a division of the South African Sugar Association (SASA), is seeking to appoint a Research Farm Manager: Pongola Research Station on a permanent basis. The position will be based at SASRI's Breeding and Field Resource Unit (BFRU) in Pongola. Pongola is SASRI's largest research station, and much of the work done there shapes the future of irrigated sugarcane in South Africa. It is home to our irrigated plant breeding programme, as well as smut, ripener and tawny rust trials and the evaluation of international varieties. Growers in Pongola, Komati and Malelane depend on the new varieties that come out of this work. We are looking for an experienced Farm Manager who knows irrigation inside out and can give our researchers the well-run, well-watered station their trials depend on. About the role The Research Farm Manager runs the day-to-day operation of the station. The job is to create the best possible conditions for field experiments, run the station as a productive commercial unit, and look after the land for the long term. You will lead a team of about 61 people (39 permanent and 22 seasonal), supported by an Assistant Farm Manager, and report to the Research Stations' Manager.
