ONR's mission is to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is the UK's independent regulator for nuclear safety, security, safeguards and conventional health and safety. Working across operating reactors, defence programmes, new nuclear build, decommissioning and radioactive waste management, ONR plays a critical role in protecting people, communities and the environment while supporting the safe and sustainable future use of nuclear technology to decarbonise our economy and maintain national security.

Your new organisation

You will be joining a highly respected organisation at the heart of one of the UK's most strategically important sectors. As part of ONR's award-winning Human Factors team, you will work alongside recognised specialists and influence decisions that shape safety performance across the nuclear industry both here and abroad.

This is a unique opportunity to combine technical excellence, public purpose and professional development in a role with impact far beyond a single organisation or project.

Your new role

As a Human Factors Nuclear Safety Inspector, you will play a key role in ensuring the human contribution to risk is acknowledged and duty holders robustly substantiate such claims, appropriately considering the impact of individual, team and organisational performance on human performance.

The role offers exceptional breadth and variety covering the entire lifecycle of a facility; including assessments of proposed new designs, plus the regulation of construction, operation, decommissioning and hazard reduction actives. To do this you will complete assessments, undertake inspections, lead intervention projects and providing advice and guidance to the industry. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams across ONR and engage with senior stakeholders across the nuclear sector.

A key part of the role involves influencing organisations to implement effective measures that support reliable human performance. Success comes from combining technical expertise with sound judgement, strong communication skills and the ability to build credibility and trust.

Alongside core regulatory activities, there are opportunities to contribute to investigations, research programmes, international collaboration and the development of future inspectors through mentoring and technical leadership.

What you'll need to succeed

You will bring significant applied Human Factors expertise gained within the nuclear sector or another high-hazard, highly regulated environment of assessing the human contribution to risk and implementing solutions that reducing risks so far as is reasonably practicable (SFAIRP). Experience of using safety and engineering analysis to target and prioritise human factors work, producing Human Factors analysis, assessments and reports and ultimately integrating these findings into risk assessments / safety cases which substantiate human performance claims and demonstrate risk is reduced al low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).

Experience in areas such as Human Factors Integration (HFI), allocation of function, qualitative and quantitative Human Reliability Assessment (HRA), Human Machine Interface (HMI) and workplace design and the development of procedures, training and competence management programmes to enhance human performance is important. Whilst nuclear experience is advantageous, experience from high-hazard sectors will also be considered where candidates can demonstrate the relevance of such experience.

In addition to technical knowledge and experience, we seek candidates with strong communication and influencing skills. Successful candidates will need to be capable of analysing complex technical information, making proportionate evidence-based judgements and working collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders.

A relevant degree and Chartered Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF), British Psychological Society (BPS), or equivalent professional standing relevant to the role is expected. Equivalent applied experience giving the candidate the potential to achieve chartered status via alternative routes would also be considered.

What you'll get in return

This is a rare opportunity to influence safety outcomes across an entire industry rather than within a single organisation.

You will gain exposure to the full nuclear lifecycle, from new build and advanced technologies through to operations, defence and decommissioning, while working alongside some of the leading Human Factors, safety and regulatory professionals in the sector. Whether your interests lie in technical specialism, research, mentoring or leadership, ONR offers genuine opportunities for long-term career development. You'll benefit from significant investment in training and development, opportunities to engage with regulators, academics and industry experts in the UK and internationally, and the chance to make a tangible contribution to public safety and the future of nuclear energy.

With flexible hybrid working, a supportive culture and work of real national importance, this is an opportunity to make a lasting impact while continuing to develop as a Human Factors professional.

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must hold or be able to secure SC clearance.

To apply

The Office for Nuclear Regulation welcomes applications from experienced Human Factors professionals from the nuclear sector and other relevant high-hazard industries.

If you are looking for a role that combines technical challenge, professional growth and the opportunity to influence safety at a national level, we would like to hear from you.
