Introduction to the role

TeacherActive is currently recruiting for an experienced and compassionate Family Support Worker to support a welcoming and inclusive Children’s Centre service working with children, young people and their families.

The service supports children and young people aged 0–19 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and works closely with parents, carers, health professionals, schools, nurseries and other partner agencies.

This is a varied and rewarding position involving direct work with children and young people alongside wider family and parent support. The successful candidate will ideally have experience within family support, children’s services or SEND and be confident building positive relationships with families from a range of backgrounds.

Experience across different age groups would be particularly beneficial, although candidates do not need to have worked across the full 0–19 age range.

Candidate Requirements

The successful Family Support Worker will ideally have:

  • Previous experience working as a Family Support Worker, Children’s Support Worker or in a similar role.
  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEND.
  • Confidence working directly with parents and carers, including families experiencing disadvantage or additional challenges.
  • Experience providing 1:1 and group-based support to children, young people or families.
  • An understanding of safeguarding and the importance of maintaining professional boundaries.
  • The ability to build positive and trusting relationships with children, young people and their families.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work effectively alongside schools, nurseries, health professionals and other agencies.
  • A patient, empathetic and non-judgemental approach.
  • An NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification is desirable but not essential.

Key Responsibilities

As a Family Support Worker, your responsibilities may include:

  • Delivering Stay and Play sessions for children and their families.
  • Supporting SEND short breaks and crèche provision.
  • Delivering parent and child support sessions.
  • Providing practical and emotional support to parents and carers.
  • Supporting children and young people during holiday play schemes and group activities.
  • Working with disabled children, young people and their siblings.
  • Providing individual and group-based interventions for families.
  • Supporting positive parenting programmes and family-focused activities.
  • Helping families work towards agreed outcomes through appropriate interventions and support plans.
  • Building positive relationships with families and identifying appropriate areas of support.
  • Working collaboratively with health colleagues, schools, nurseries and other agencies.
  • Maintaining accurate records in line with organisational policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring all support is delivered in accordance with safeguarding, regulatory and organisational requirements.

Compliance Requirements

Applicants will be required to provide:

  • Two professional references from recent employers.
  • An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service.
  • If you do not currently hold a suitable DBS, willingness to obtain a new Enhanced DBS through TeacherActive.
  • Evidence of your Right to Work in the UK.
