Contract: Full-time, 1-Year Fixed Term
Start Date: September 2026
Hours: School Hours, Monday–Friday
Are you a caring, organised and approachable individual with experience in healthcare, nursing, first aid or student welfare?

A welcoming and inclusive secondary school in Brent is looking for a dedicated School Welfare Officer / School Nurse to join its pastoral and student support team from September 2026. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with young people and wants to use their healthcare or welfare experience within an education setting.

The school is looking for someone who can provide a calm, reassuring presence for pupils throughout the school day, dealing with everything from minor injuries and illnesses to ongoing medical needs and student wellbeing.

The Role

As the School Welfare Officer / School Nurse, you will be responsible for supporting the health, safety and welfare of pupils across the school.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing first aid and immediate care to pupils who become unwell or injured during the school day
  • Assessing students and determining the appropriate course of action
  • Managing the school's medical room and ensuring it remains safe, organised and appropriately stocked
  • Administering medication in accordance with school policies and individual healthcare plans
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential medical and welfare records
  • Supporting pupils with ongoing medical conditions, allergies and specific healthcare requirements
  • Liaising with parents and carers regarding illness, injury and medical concerns
  • Working closely with the school's safeguarding, pastoral and SEN teams
  • Helping to develop and maintain individual healthcare plans
  • Supporting the school's procedures around allergies, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and other medical needs
  • Contributing to the wider safeguarding and wellbeing culture of the school
  • Referring concerns to senior staff or emergency medical services where appropriate

Who Are We Looking For?

The successful candidate will be compassionate, professional and confident working independently.

Previous experience as a School Nurse, Welfare Officer, Healthcare Assistant, Nurse, First Aider, Medical Administrator or similar healthcare/welfare professional would be highly advantageous.

You should have:

  • A recognised First Aid qualification or relevant healthcare experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A calm and reassuring manner
  • Strong organisation and record-keeping skills
  • The ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately
  • Confidence communicating with pupils, parents and school staff
  • An understanding of safeguarding and the importance of pupil wellbeing
  • The ability to respond calmly and appropriately in urgent situations

A formal nursing qualification would be welcomed but is not essential, provided you have suitable experience and the appropriate first aid/healthcare knowledge for the position.

The School

This Brent secondary school has established a strong pastoral structure designed to ensure that pupils feel safe, supported and able to succeed.

The Welfare Officer plays an important part in that structure. You will work alongside experienced pastoral, safeguarding, SEND and senior leadership colleagues, meaning you will become a central point of support for students throughout the school day.

The school is easily accessible from across Brent and North West London, with good public transport connections.

Why Apply?

This position offers an excellent opportunity to move into the education sector while continuing to use your healthcare and welfare experience.

You'll benefit from:

  • £25,000 per annum / £110 per day
  • Monday–Friday working
  • School-based hours
  • No weekend shifts
  • A supportive pastoral and safeguarding team
  • A rewarding role supporting young people's health and wellbeing
  • Valuable experience within a secondary school environment
  • A full-time, one-year fixed-term position

This role could be particularly well suited to someone with a background in nursing, healthcare, paediatric care, first aid or student welfare who is looking for a position offering greater consistency than traditional healthcare shift patterns.
