SEN Teaching Assistant – Complex Needs & Behaviour Support

East London | Full-Time | Long-Term | Immediate Start
Up to £650 per week

KPi Education is working in partnership with a specialist SEN provision in East London to recruit an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant / Behaviour Support Assistant. This is a high-responsibility role supporting pupils from Primary through to Sixth Form, many of whom require intensive behavioural and emotional support.

The Role – SEN Teaching Assistant (Complex Behaviour Support)

You will work with pupils aged 5–18 presenting with significant behavioural and emotional needs, including:

  • Severe and persistent challenging behaviour
  • SEMH (Social, Emotional & Mental Health) needs
  • Autism (ASC), ADHD, PDA profiles
  • Trauma, attachment difficulties, and dysregulation
  • Crisis behaviour requiring skilled intervention

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with high-level behavioural needs
  • Confidently applying Team Teach and de-escalation techniques
  • Supporting emotional regulation, crisis management, and recovery strategies
  • Implementing individual behaviour intervention plans
  • Supporting classroom engagement, transitions, and structured routines
  • Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams
  • Maintaining a safe, structured, and therapeutic learning environment

This is a hands-on, demanding role requiring experience, resilience, and professionalism.

Essential Person Specification

To be considered, you must have:

  • A degree in Psychology or a related field (e.g. Mental Health, Criminology, Education, Sociology)
  • Substantial experience supporting SEN pupils with complex or severe behaviour
  • Team Teach training (or equivalent accredited behaviour intervention qualification)
  • Proven experience using de-escalation and positive behaviour strategies
  • Experience in an SEN school, SEMH provision, PRU, alternative provision, or youth service
  • Strong emotional resilience, patience, and a calm, authoritative approach

Desirable:

  • Trauma-informed practice experience
  • Strong understanding of autism, ADHD, SEMH, and PDA
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, therapeutic education, and behaviour frameworks
