Graduate English Teaching Assistant

Coventry | Full-Time | £20,000–£25,000

Turn your passion for English into a career that makes a difference.

Are you an English graduate who loves literature, language and helping others find their voice?

Whether you're considering teacher training, tutoring or a wider career in education, this could be your opportunity to gain valuable experience in a secondary school while putting your degree to work.

KPI Education is recruiting for a Graduate English Teaching Assistant to join a secondary school in Coventry, supporting students to strengthen their literacy, develop their ideas and grow in confidence.

You'll be working alongside experienced English teachers, gaining first-hand insight into classroom life while helping young people discover what they're capable of.

What will you be doing?

You'll play an active role in supporting learning across the English curriculum, working with students individually, in small groups and within the classroom.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering targeted 1:1 and small-group support across English.

  • Helping students improve their reading, writing and comprehension.

  • Supporting essay writing, literary analysis and the development of ideas.

  • Encouraging engagement with both English Language and English Literature.

  • Explaining challenging concepts in clear, accessible ways.

  • Supporting teachers with differentiated learning activities.

  • Promoting participation, independence and positive learning habits.

  • Providing additional literacy support where needed.

  • Building positive relationships with students and encouraging their confidence.

  • Working closely with English teachers and the wider school team.

  • Sharing observations and feedback on student progress where appropriate.

What makes someone suitable?

We're looking for a graduate who combines strong academic knowledge with the enthusiasm and interpersonal skills needed to support young people.

You'll ideally have:

  • A degree in English, English Literature or a closely related subject, ideally at 2:1 or above.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong subject knowledge and the ability to explain ideas effectively.

  • A genuine interest in education and student development.

  • Patience, enthusiasm and a proactive attitude.

  • The ability to establish positive relationships with young people.

You don't need previous classroom experience to apply.

Tutoring, mentoring, volunteering or other experience working with young people would be beneficial, but we're equally interested in graduates who can demonstrate the right attitude, communication skills and motivation to make a positive contribution.

Why consider this opportunity?

This isn't simply a chance to observe a classroom. It's an opportunity to develop practical skills, build your confidence and gain a clearer understanding of where a career in education could take you.

Through the role, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Gain hands-on experience in a secondary school environment.

  • Develop your mentoring, communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Support learners with different abilities and learning needs.

  • Understand the day-to-day workings of an English department.

  • Learn from experienced teaching professionals.

  • Build confidence in supporting learning and classroom activities.

  • Access training and professional development opportunities.

  • Strengthen your experience ahead of teacher training, tutoring or other education-based careers.

Your English degree could be the start of something bigger.

If you're an English graduate looking to take your first steps into education, share your subject knowledge and help students become more confident learners, we'd love to hear from you.
