The South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI) is a world-renowned agricultural research institute conducting research for the sugar industry. There are a number of different research projects that take place at SASRI which are clustered into four multidisciplinary programs, namely, Variety Improvement, Crop Protection, Crop Performance & Management and System Design and Optimization.

SASRI is currently looking for two graduates in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for 2024.

The successful candidate will be working with Researchers on a number of exciting multidisciplinary research projects including mapping and monitoring land cover change, crop monitoring and management using SAR, and modelling sugarcane quality using UAV (drone) multispectral imagery.

Purpose of the Graduate Program is to:

• Provide workplace experience to graduates allowing them practical exposure that will enrich their academic training, enhancing future employability
• Provide additional skills development training that will stimulate personal and professional growth, provide life skills and boost work readiness (Basic Business, Technical and Life Skills Training) through formal mentorship

Essential Entry Requirements:

• This program specifically targets South African candidates who have completed a Bachelor's Degree /Post-Graduate Degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or equivalent
• A working knowledge of ArcGIS/QGIS, ENVI and/or ERDAS Imagine is required
• Experience with geodatabases, Survey123, and knowledge of drone image processing packages will be advantageous

Term of the Internship:

• Participants will be offered a one-year contract
