Graduate Learning Support Assistant – Secondary

Milk Education is currently recruiting enthusiastic Graduate Learning Support Assistants to support secondary schools across Durham and the surrounding areas. This is an excellent opportunity for graduates looking to gain hands-on classroom experience, develop their skills, and make a positive difference to students while exploring a future career in teaching, education, psychology, youth work, or related fields.

 

The Role:

As a Graduate Learning Support Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and school staff to support students across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. You will help students access their learning, build confidence, and develop their independence within a supportive school environment.

You may provide one-to-one support, work with small groups, or assist within the wider classroom. This role is ideal for graduates who are enthusiastic, patient, and keen to develop their understanding of education and working with young people.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support students across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 within the classroom
  • Provide one-to-one and small group support where required
  • Assist teachers with classroom activities and lesson delivery
  • Encourage students to engage positively with their learning
  • Help students develop confidence, independence, and resilience
  • Support students who may have additional learning needs or SEND
  • Help students overcome barriers to learning and achieve their individual goals
  • Build positive and professional relationships with students
  • Support positive behaviour and maintain a calm learning environment
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to teaching staff
  • Follow all safeguarding, behaviour, and school policies

 

Who We're Looking For

We are seeking graduates who:

  • Hold a degree or are due to graduate
  • Are passionate about working with children and young people
  • Are considering a career in teaching, education, psychology, youth work, or a related field
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Are patient, approachable, and confident when working with young people
  • Can build positive relationships with students of different abilities and backgrounds
  • Are enthusiastic, reliable, and willing to learn
  • Are committed to safeguarding and promoting student welfare

Requirements

  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification
  • Previous experience working with children or young people is desirable but not essential
  • Experience through volunteering, mentoring, coaching, tutoring, youth work, or similar is beneficial
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • A positive and adaptable approach
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting student welfare
  • Ability to provide two recent professional references
