Graduate English Teaching Assistant

Birmingham | Full-Time | £20,000–£25,000

Your degree has given you the knowledge. Now put it into practice.

Could your passion for English help a student discover their confidence, develop their ideas or find a love of learning?

KPI Education is seeking an enthusiastic English graduate for a Graduate English Teaching Assistant opportunity at a secondary school in Birmingham.

Whether you're considering teacher training, tutoring or exploring a longer-term career in education, this role offers the chance to gain first-hand classroom experience while making a meaningful contribution to students' learning.

You'll bring your subject knowledge into the classroom, work alongside experienced teachers and help young people develop skills that extend far beyond English lessons.

What will your day involve?

As part of the English department, you'll provide additional support to pupils across the curriculum, helping them engage with learning and approach challenging topics with greater confidence.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering targeted 1:1 and small-group support across English.

  • Helping students improve their literacy, reading, writing and comprehension.

  • Supporting essay development, literary analysis and written expression.

  • Encouraging engagement with English Language and English Literature.

  • Explaining complex ideas in accessible and engaging ways.

  • Assisting with differentiated classroom activities and learning tasks.

  • Promoting participation, confidence and independent study.

  • Providing additional literacy support where required.

  • Building constructive relationships with students.

  • Working closely with English teachers and the wider school team.

  • Sharing relevant observations and feedback on student progress.

What will you bring?

We're looking for someone who combines academic ability with the interpersonal skills and enthusiasm needed to support young people.

You'll ideally have:

  • An English, English Literature or closely related degree, ideally at 2:1 or above.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent subject knowledge and an enthusiasm for English.

  • The ability to explain concepts clearly and adapt your communication.

  • A genuine interest in working within education.

  • Patience, positivity and a willingness to support different learners.

  • The confidence to build positive relationships with students.

No previous school experience? That's absolutely fine.

Tutoring, mentoring, volunteering or other experience working with young people would be advantageous, but previous classroom experience isn't essential. We're keen to hear from graduates with the right attitude, subject knowledge and motivation to make a difference.

What could this opportunity offer you?

Your first experience in education can help shape the direction of your future career.

This position provides an opportunity to:

  • Develop practical experience within a secondary school.

  • Strengthen your communication, mentoring and interpersonal skills.

  • Build confidence supporting young people.

  • Gain experience adapting support to different abilities and learning needs.

  • Learn from experienced teaching professionals.

  • Develop an understanding of the day-to-day running of an English department.

  • Access training and professional development opportunities.

  • Build a foundation for teacher training, tutoring or wider education careers.

Ready to make your degree count?

If you're an English graduate looking for more than just a first step after university, this could be your opportunity to develop professionally while helping young people reach their potential.
