CAD / BIM Technician | Leeds | Full Time | £38,000 per annum, negotiable for the right candidate

Our client is seeking an experienced and proactive CAD / BIM Technician to join our engineering team. 

The office operates an open-plan working environment, with the successful candidate working as the only technician in the business. You will work independently while providing CAD and BIM support across the wider team, so they are looking for someone comfortable taking ownership of their workload while working closely with colleagues.

The Role

This is a hands-on technical role with the opportunity to take real ownership of how CAD and BIM are managed within the business. Alongside producing high-quality drawings and models to support our engineers, you will become a key point of contact for BIM, CAD standards and drawing quality assurance across the office.

You will have a strong background in AutoCAD and Revit, who is organised, proactive and comfortable working independently while supporting a wider team.

You will be the only technician in the business, so the role will suit someone who is confident managing their own workload, prioritising requests from different engineers and taking ownership of CAD/BIM requirements across multiple projects.

Key Responsibilities

CAD & Technical Drawing Production

• Produce, amend and manage accurate, high-quality engineering drawings using AutoCAD and Revit
• Produce and develop drawings and models from engineers' sketches, mark-ups, calculations and technical information
• Work closely with engineers to understand project requirements and translate engineering information into clear, accurate drawings
• Maintain drawings throughout the design process, incorporating design changes and revisions accurately
• Ensure drawings are produced consistently and in accordance with company and project standards
• Assist engineers with drawing production, modelling and other technical documentation across multiple projects

BIM Coordination & Ownership

• Act as the internal point of contact for BIM-related requirements and good practice
• Help develop, implement and maintain appropriate BIM standards, procedures and workflows
• Ensure Revit models and associated information are structured and maintained consistently
• Support the engineering team in adopting efficient BIM working practices
• Assist with project-specific BIM requirements and information standards
• Develop and maintain templates, libraries and standardised content to improve consistency and efficiency
• Keep up to date with developments in BIM, Revit and related digital engineering technologies and identify opportunities to improve the way we work
• Take ownership of this area and develop your expertise and responsibilities over time

CAD / BIM Quality Assurance

• Develop and maintain CAD/BIM standards and QA procedures across AutoCAD, Revit and, where applicable, Civil 3D
• Establish consistent drawing standards covering layers, line weights, naming conventions, drawing numbering, templates, title blocks, revision control and file management
• Carry out drawing and model QA checks before information is issued
• Help ensure consistency between different engineers, technicians, projects and software platforms
• Maintain drawing templates and standard details
• Identify recurring drawing or modelling issues and help implement improvements
• Promote good document control and drawing management practices
• Help develop practical checklists and procedures that improve quality without creating unnecessary administration
• Support continuous improvement of the company's CAD/BIM systems and workflows

Supporting the Engineering Team

• Provide responsive CAD/BIM support to a team of engineers
• Manage drawing requests from multiple engineers and projects
• Prioritise workload effectively, particularly where several projects have competing deadlines
• Communicate clearly regarding workloads, priorities and expected completion dates
• Work independently when appropriate while recognising when clarification or engineering input is required
• Be willing to help colleagues and contribute positively to the wider team
• Take pride in producing accurate, professional work

Requirements

Essential

• Previous professional experience as a CAD Technician, BIM Technician, Engineering Technician or similar
• Strong working knowledge and professional experience using AutoCAD
• Strong working knowledge and professional experience using Revit
• Experience producing engineering or construction-related technical drawings
• Good understanding of drawing standards, drawing management and revision control
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy and quality
• Ability to interpret engineers' sketches, mark-ups and technical information
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and project deadlines effectively
• Good communication and organisational skills
• Proactive approach with the ability to work independently
• Comfortable working closely with a wider team in an open-plan office environment

Desirable

• Experience using Autodesk Civil 3D
• Genuine interest and willingness to learn Civil 3D if experience is limited
• Previous experience establishing or maintaining CAD/BIM standards and QA procedures
• Experience coordinating BIM information or acting as a BIM lead/champion within an engineering environment
• Experience creating and maintaining Revit templates, families and standard content
• Knowledge of current BIM standards and good practice, including ISO 19650
• Experience working within an engineering consultancy or similar technical environment
• Experience supporting civil, structural or infrastructure engineering projects
• Experience improving CAD/BIM workflows and introducing greater standardisation
