Salary:
£35,000 - £45,000/annum

Join a specialist building performance team at the forefront of low-energy, high-comfort building design. You’ll work on complex projects across commercial, residential, and mixed-use developments, using advanced simulation tools to drive measurable performance improvements and support net-zero and sustainability goals.

About the Role:
As a Building Performance Consultant/Engineer, you will lead the analysis and optimisation of building energy and environmental performance from early concept through to post-occupancy. You will use advanced simulation and data analytics to inform design decisions, validate performance against targets, and support continuous improvement across the project portfolio. Your work will directly influence design strategies, reduce operational energy use, and enhance occupant comfort and wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities:
* Develop, run, and interpret dynamic thermal models to assess energy use, overheating risk, comfort, and environmental performance.
* Carry out detailed building performance simulations using tools such as IESVE, DesignBuilder, or EnergyPlus to support design development and compliance.
* Analyse building performance data, including metered energy use and environmental monitoring, to benchmark and verify design assumptions.
* Identify performance gaps and propose targeted optimisation measures to improve energy efficiency, comfort, and system operation.
* Produce clear, technically robust reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to internal teams and external stakeholders.
* Collaborate closely with architects, MEP engineers, and sustainability specialists to integrate performance insights into design decisions.
* Support the development and refinement of internal modelling standards, workflows, and quality assurance processes.
* Contribute to post-occupancy evaluations and continuous improvement of building performance across the project lifecycle.

Key Requirements:
* Proven experience in building performance engineering or consultancy, with a focus on thermal and energy analysis.
* Strong practical experience in dynamic thermal modelling and building performance simulation using IESVE, DesignBuilder, EnergyPlus, or similar tools.
* Demonstrable ability to analyse and interpret building performance data, including energy consumption and environmental conditions.
* Solid understanding of building physics, including heat transfer, ventilation, and thermal comfort principles.
* Experience working on UK building projects and familiarity with relevant performance standards and guidance (e.g. Part L, TM52/TM59, NABERS, or similar).
* Ability to translate complex technical outputs into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
* Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a consultancy environment.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.

Desirable Skills:
* Experience with parametric analysis and optimisation workflows (e.g. using Python, Grasshopper, or similar).
* Knowledge of building controls, HVAC systems, and their impact on operational performance.
* Exposure to post-occupancy evaluation, commissioning, or soft landings processes.
* Familiarity with broader sustainability frameworks (e.g. BREEAM, LEED, WELL) and their performance requirements.
* Experience contributing to research, innovation projects, or development of internal tools and methodologies.

Qualifications:
* Degree in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
* Postgraduate qualification in building performance, building physics, energy engineering, or a related field is preferred.
* Professional membership or working towards membership of CIBSE, IMechE, or an equivalent institution is advantageous.
* Evidence of ongoing professional development in building performance simulation and related tools.

If you are driven by data, passionate about building performance, and keen to influence low-carbon, high-comfort design, this role offers the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a diverse range of projects. Apply now to take the next step in your building performance career.
