SEN Teacher - Autism & Complex Needs

Barnet, North London | Specialist SEN School | Full-Time | Permanent

£45,000 - $58,000 + SEN Allowance | September Start

Are you a passionate teacher looking to make a genuine difference to the lives of young people with Autism and complex learning needs?

Do you thrive in highly structured, nurturing environments where relationships, communication and personalised learning are at the heart of everything you do?

Would you like to join a specialist school where you'll work alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team, supported by skilled Teaching Assistants, to help pupils achieve meaningful outcomes every day?

A highly regarded specialist SEN school in Barnet is seeking an enthusiastic and committed SEN Teacher to join their team on a permanent basis from September.

The school supports pupils aged 14-18 with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and complex learning needs. Classes are intentionally small, allowing staff to build strong relationships and deliver highly personalised learning. Pupils are working below Pre-Key Stage 1 expectations and follow individual learning pathways centred around communication, independence, life skills and preparing for adulthood. Many pupils communicate using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), and the school follows structured, evidence-informed approaches including the SCERTS framework to support communication, emotional regulation and social development.

You will be responsible for a class of approximately eight pupils, supported by a team of four experienced Teaching Assistants. Working collaboratively with therapists, support staff and senior leaders, you will create engaging, meaningful learning experiences tailored to each pupil's EHCP outcomes whilst fostering independence, confidence and wellbeing.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and delivering highly differentiated lessons tailored to individual EHCP outcomes.
  • Supporting pupils with Autism, communication needs and complex learning difficulties.
  • Using AAC, visual supports and structured teaching approaches to maximise communication and engagement.
  • Creating calm, predictable classroom environments that promote emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
  • Working collaboratively with Teaching Assistants, therapists and wider multidisciplinary teams.
  • Monitoring pupil progress through observation, assessment and personalised learning targets.
  • Preparing reports for Annual Reviews and contributing to EHCP reviews.
  • Building positive partnerships with parents, carers and external professionals.
  • Supporting pupils to develop communication, independence, social interaction and functional life skills.
  • Promoting safeguarding and maintaining the highest standards of care and wellbeing for every pupil.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
  • Experience teaching pupils with SEND, Autism or complex learning needs (either within specialist or mainstream settings).
  • Excellent understanding of adaptive teaching and differentiated curriculum planning.
  • A calm, patient and relationship-focused approach to behaviour and communication.
  • The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • A genuine passion for supporting young people with additional needs to achieve their full potential.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a welcoming specialist school with a strong collaborative culture, outstanding support from senior leaders and excellent opportunities for continued professional development. The role would suit an experienced SEN Teacher or a mainstream teacher with a genuine interest in transitioning into specialist education.
