Are you an experienced Accounts Assistant or Assistant Accountant looking for your next step within a supportive finance team?

We are working with an established business on the outskirts of Newark who are looking to appoint an Assistant Accountant to join their finance team of four, reporting directly to the Financial Controller.

This is a varied opportunity for someone who enjoys getting involved across the wider finance function and wants to develop their experience across month-end, management accounts, credit control, VAT, payroll, cash flow and general accounting.

The Role

Working closely with the Financial Controller and Finance Director, you will provide day-to-day support across the finance function, helping to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Responding to incoming finance enquiries promptly and professionally.
  • Supporting the Financial Controller and Finance Director with financial information and ad-hoc requirements.
  • Preparing monthly accrual and prepayment schedules.
  • Preparing and posting journals.
  • Carrying out periodic bank reconciliations.
  • Supporting the preparation of the monthly management accounts pack.
  • Assisting with cash flow forecasting and budgeting.
  • Maintaining the Fixed Asset Register, including journals for additions, disposals and monthly depreciation.
  • Maintaining financial records and posting transactions through computerised stock and project management systems.
  • Preparing reports and presenting key financial data to departmental managers and directors.
  • Managing day-to-day credit control and collection of customer debt.
  • Creating new customer and supplier accounts on Sage and PSA.
  • Working towards individual and team KPIs to support accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Processing sales orders into Sage.
  • Raising sales invoices and applications for payment upon completion of work.
  • Uploading invoices onto customer portals.
  • Raising purchase orders in Sage.
  • Completing credit account assessments and processing.
  • Processing supplier invoices, validating nominal coding and matching PODs.
  • Processing bank and cash payments and receipts onto Sage.
  • Processing credit card expenses through Excel and Sage.
  • Setting up payments through the company's online banking platform.
  • Ensuring the order book is regularly maintained and identifying opportunities to support timely invoicing.
  • Preparing and processing payroll.
  • Processing, reconciling and filing VAT returns.
  • Providing general finance and ad-hoc support to the Financial Controller.

About You

We're looking for someone with a strong grounding in accounts who is ready to take on a varied role and develop their technical accounting experience.

You will ideally have:

  • Previous experience in an Accounts Assistant, Assistant Accountant or similar finance role.
  • Experience of month-end processes, including accruals, prepayments and journals.
  • Good understanding of bank reconciliations and VAT.
  • Experience with sales and purchase ledger and credit control.
  • Strong Excel skills and experience using accounting software.
  • Experience with Sage would be highly advantageous.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a small finance team.
  • A proactive approach with the confidence to identify issues and suggest improvements.

AAT qualification or part-qualification would be advantageous, although relevant experience will also be considered.
