Principal Safety Case Engineer

Help us to make a world of difference

Urenco is a global leader in the production of low carbon energy. We work at the cutting edge of the transition to a sustainable, net zero world.

We’re looking for a Principal Safety Case Engineer. Based at our Capenhurst location, you’ll be part of the Urenco Group Design Authority team. This centralised role supports our international portfolio of large-scale and complex nuclear production facilities, including (but not limited to) enrichment, deconversion, decommissioning, and nuclear waste management projects.

As a Principal Safety Case Engineer, you will act as a senior technical leader, providing safety-in-design assurance and/or developing, assessing, and managing safety cases for highly regulated facilities such as nuclear enrichment plants and chemical plants. Your work ensures compliance with relevant safety and environmental regulations, supports operational process safety, and provides strategic safety management across the design phases (including FEED) of our global projects.

You will be responsible for embedding safety strategies from the very start of each project, conducting risk assessments, preparing or supporting technical safety and licence documentation, and providing oversight to design engineers and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure compliance with safety objectives and legislative requirements.

Key responsibilities include creating or reviewing safety case strategies, authoring and maintaining technical safety documentation, leading safety assessments (such as HAZID, HAZOP, SWIFT, and FMEA), liaising with regulators and clients, and mentoring and coaching engineers. Success in this role requires a deep understanding of safety engineering principles, knowledge of regulatory frameworks, and experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and complex projects.

You and your team will prepare high-quality radiological, criticality and chemical (toxicity) safety assessments, including risk management strategies, Preliminary and Pre-Construction Safety Reports (PSRs, PCSRs), and their equivalents. Produce and/or review engineering calculations, design basis documents, and technical reports. Maintain a strategic overview of design safety case approaches and technical solutions across projects, promoting consistency and sharing best practices.

At Urenco we’re committed to giving you opportunities to be your best. If you feel you meet some, but not all of what we're looking for, please still apply. We believe in embracing the passion and potential of our people, and to achieve this we offer market leading training and development experiences. Along with the opportunity to be mentored and coached by some of the smartest minds in the industry.

What you’ll do:

  • Safety Case Leadership: Lead the development and review of safety cases for complex nuclear facilities, ensuring compliance with international nuclear safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Design Authority Oversight: Provide expert guidance and technical oversight on safety in design, influencing decisions from concept through to commissioning.
  • Global Standardisation: Develop and maintain global standards, processes, and tools for safety case development and safety-in-design, ensuring consistency across international projects.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as a key interface with internal and external stakeholders including regulators, project managers, engineering teams, site compliance departments, and international partners to ensure safety objectives are achieved.
  • Risk Management: Identify, assess, and mitigate safety risks associated with nuclear plant design and operation, embedding risk-informed decision-making into project governance.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive innovation and continuous improvement in safety case methodologies, incorporating lessons learned and emerging best practices.

What do you need to thrive in this role?

Education & Qualifications

  • Essential: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Nuclear Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree or PhD from an accredited university in Nuclear Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a related discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in nuclear safety case development, including demonstrable involvement in large-scale facility projects and international regulatory environments.
  • Demonstrable track record in successful safety case delivery and/or design assurance, covering conceptual design, basic design, and FEED stages of complex process facilities.
  • Experience leading teams or coaching safety case engineers with varying levels of expertise.

Technical Expertise

  • Deep understanding of nuclear safety principles and regulatory frameworks (e.g., IAEA, WENRA, ONR, NCR, etc.).
  • Expertise in deterministic and probabilistic safety analysis.
  • Proficiency in hazard identification techniques (e.g., HAZOP, FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis).
  • Strong understanding of nuclear fuel cycle processes and associated safety challenges.

Leadership & Interpersonal Skills

  • Strong leadership and influencing skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Ability to manage complex stakeholder environments across cultures and technical disciplines.
