CAD Engineer

Help us to make a world of difference

Urenco is a global leader in the production of low carbon energy. We work at the cutting edge of the transition to a sustainable, net zero world.

As a CAD Engineer, you will play a key role in the delivery of critical engineering drawings and models used in the design, operation, and modification of high-integrity systems and infrastructure. Working as part of the Design team, you will contribute to nuclear safety and plant reliability by producing precise, compliant, and technically robust CAD outputs.

Role Overview:

The CAD Engineer will be responsible for creating and maintaining 2D and 3D engineering drawings and models that support Urenco’s nuclear plant design, maintenance, decommissioning, and improvement projects. The role requires close collaboration with engineering, and project teams to ensure the accuracy and regulatory compliance of all design documentation.

At Urenco, we are committed to fostering your growth and offering opportunities for professional development. If you meet some but not all of the qualifications listed, we still encourage you to apply. We value passion, potential, and a willingness to learn, and we offer industry-leading training and mentorship to help you achieve your full potential.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop and manage a range of 2D and 3D CAD deliverables including layout drawings, mechanical details, P&IDs, schematics, and general arrangements.
  • Translate engineering requirements and technical specifications into representative 2D drawings and 3D models.
  • Maintain the integrity of design data by ensuring all drawings meet applicable quality, safety, and regulatory standards (BS, ISO, ASME).
  • Support FEED, from concept design through to Basic Design.
  • Review Detail Design submissions from supply chain ensuring 2D and 3D output is consistent with Urenco Design Standards and Technical Specifications.
  • Interface with engineers from multiple disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil, process) to support cross-functional project delivery.
  • Ensure that all drawing changes follow Urenco’s document control and engineering change processes, including version tracking and audit readiness.
  • Conduct desk top reviews relating to clash detection and exclusion zone requirements for maintenance/access in line with nuclear site safety standards.
  • Work with document control and configuration management teams to maintain drawing registers and digital archives.
  • Participate in design reviews, safety assessments, and constructability workshops, contributing CAD expertise to the development of practical, safe solutions.
  • Assist in the creation and upkeep of CAD standards, libraries, and templates to drive consistency and efficiency across projects.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in CAD tools, methods, and digital engineering capabilities (e.g., BIM, digital twin).

What You’ll Need to Thrive in This Role

Essential:

  • HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical, Electrical, Design Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Strong proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software such as AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, or similar platforms.
  • Experience working in a technical CAD role within a regulated, industrial, or engineering project environment.
  • Strong understanding of engineering drawing standards and practices (e.g., BS 8888, ISO 5459).
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to quality and accuracy.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience working in the nuclear, energy, defence, or high-hazard industries.
  • Knowledge of nuclear safety principles and understanding of site licence requirements.
  • Familiarity with CAD data management systems and document control platforms (e.g., Vault, ProjectWise, or similar).
  • Awareness of digital engineering trends such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) or 3D scanning integration.
  • Understanding of pressure systems, containment, or radioactive materials handling in a design context
