We’re currently recruiting for a Behaviour Mentor to join an Alternative Provision in Nottingham on a long-term basis. This is a temporary opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting young people who may face barriers to education.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with experience in behaviour support, youth work, mentoring, SEN, SEMH or education who wants to make a genuine difference to the lives of young people.

You’ll be joining a supportive setting that works with pupils who may have struggled to access mainstream education, offering them a fresh start and the opportunity to re-engage with learning. The role is ideal for someone who is patient, resilient and confident building positive relationships with young people who may present with challenging behaviour or complex emotional needs.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils, acting as a consistent and positive role model throughout the school day.
  • Supporting young people with behaviour management, emotional regulation and developing positive coping strategies.
  • Using positive behaviour management techniques, de-escalation strategies and restorative approaches to manage challenging situations.
  • Supporting pupils who may display challenging, disruptive or dysregulated behaviour, maintaining a calm and consistent approach.
  • Encouraging engagement with learning, helping pupils overcome barriers and develop confidence in an educational environment.
  • Providing 1:1 and small-group mentoring, offering guidance, encouragement and individualised support.
  • Supporting pupils with SEMH needs, additional learning needs and difficulties with social, emotional or behavioural development.
  • Helping young people develop important life skills, including communication, resilience, self-esteem and positive relationships.
  • Working closely with teachers, pastoral teams and wider support staff to implement individual behaviour plans and support strategies.
  • Maintaining a safe, structured and positive learning environment, following safeguarding procedures and school policies.

Requirements or Skills:

  • Previous experience working within Alternative Provision, PRU, SEMH, SEN, youth work or a similar support setting is desirable.
  • Experience supporting children or young people who display challenging behaviour, emotional dysregulation or disengagement from education would be advantageous.
  • A confident and resilient approach, with the ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
  • Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to gain the trust and respect of young people.
  • An understanding of positive behaviour management, de-escalation techniques and restorative approaches.
  • A patient, empathetic and non-judgemental attitude, recognising that every young person has different needs and experiences.
  • The ability to set clear boundaries, maintain consistency and promote positive behaviour.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a wider team.
  • A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers, improve their engagement and reach their potential.
  • A good understanding of safeguarding, professional boundaries and the importance of creating a safe environment for all pupils.

This role is paid within the advertised pay scale. Your starting rate will be determined by your qualifications, relevant experience, and the requirements of the assignment.
