Cover Supervisor – Secondary School in Bury

Milk Education are working with a welcoming and supportive secondary school in Bury who are looking for a confident, reliable and enthusiastic Cover Supervisor to join their team ASAP.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys working with young people and is passionate about supporting pupils to remain focused, engaged and successful in their learning. The successful candidate will play an important role in maintaining continuity of learning when teachers are absent, ensuring lessons run smoothly and pupils remain on task.

You will work across different subjects and year groups, delivering pre-prepared lessons and providing a calm, consistent and positive presence in the classroom. This role would suit experienced Cover Supervisors, Teaching Assistants, graduates and individuals with transferable experience in education, youth work, tutoring, coaching or similar settings.

Your Role

As a Cover Supervisor, you will:

  • Supervise classes during the short-term absence of teachers
  • Deliver pre-prepared lesson plans and learning activities provided by teaching staff
  • Ensure pupils remain focused, engaged and on task throughout lessons
  • Manage classroom behaviour in line with the school's behaviour policies and expectations
  • Establish and maintain a calm, positive and purposeful learning environment
  • Support pupils with their learning and provide clarification where appropriate
  • Encourage positive attitudes towards learning, achievement and behaviour
  • Adapt your approach to meet the needs of different pupils and classes
  • Take responsibility for the classroom and ensure pupils follow school expectations
  • Register pupils and maintain accurate records where required
  • Provide feedback to teachers regarding pupil engagement, behaviour and progress during lessons
  • Support pupils with additional needs where appropriate
  • Build positive and professional relationships with pupils and staff
  • Assist with duties such as break and lunchtime supervision when required
  • Support the wider school team with day-to-day activities where needed
  • Follow safeguarding procedures and school policies at all times
  • Promote pupil wellbeing and contribute to a safe, inclusive and respectful school environment

We're Looking For Someone Who:

  • Has experience working with children or young people in a school, education, childcare, youth work, tutoring, coaching or similar setting (desirable)
  • Is confident managing groups of young people in a classroom environment
  • Has strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Can establish clear boundaries while building positive relationships with pupils
  • Is calm, patient, professional and consistent when managing behaviour
  • Can follow lesson plans and instructions confidently
  • Is organised, reliable and able to work independently
  • Can adapt quickly to different subjects, year groups and classroom environments
  • Has a positive attitude and a genuine interest in supporting young people's education
  • Works effectively as part of a wider teaching and support team
  • Is flexible, proactive and keen to develop their experience within education
  • Understands the importance of safeguarding and promoting pupil welfare
  • Holds a relevant qualification or degree (desirable but not essential)

Previous experience as a Cover Supervisor is desirable but not essential. Milk Education welcomes applications from graduates and candidates with transferable experience from Teaching Assistant roles, tutoring, childcare, youth work, coaching, care or other roles involving responsibility for young people.
