A supportive secondary school in Birmingham is looking for an enthusiastic Graduate English Teaching Assistant to join its English department.

This is an exciting opportunity to take the knowledge you've developed through your degree and use it to help young people become more confident readers, writers and communicators.

The Role

You'll work alongside experienced English teachers, providing additional support to students across the English curriculum.

You could be working 1:1, in small groups or within the wider classroom, supporting students with different abilities and levels of confidence.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group supportacross English
  • Helping students develop their reading, writing and comprehension skills
  • Supporting pupils with essay writing, analysis and structuring ideas
  • Helping students engage with English Literature and Language
  • Breaking down challenging concepts and providing additional explanations
  • Assisting teachers with differentiated classroom activities and learning tasks
  • Encouraging students to participate positively in lessons
  • Helping learners develop confidence and independent study skills
  • Providing additional literacy support where required
  • Working collaboratively with English teachers and the wider school team
  • Sharing relevant feedback on student progress

Who are we looking for?

We're keen to hear from graduates with:

  • An English, English Literature or closely related degree, ideally at 2:1 or above
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent subject knowledge and a genuine enthusiasm for English
  • The ability to communicate ideas clearly and engage young people
  • A genuine interest in working within education
  • Patience, enthusiasm and a positive attitude
  • The confidence to build positive relationships with students

Previous school experience isn't essential.

Tutoring, mentoring, volunteering or experience working with young people would be beneficial, but we're also interested in graduates who have the subject knowledge, personality and enthusiasm to make a positive impact.
