Job Description

The Senior Quantity Surveyor is responsible for managing all commercial aspects of construction projects within the house building sector. This role involves preparing and managing cost plans, procurement, contract administration, and ensuring financial control throughout the project lifecycle. The post-holder leads on risk management, value engineering, and cost reporting, working closely with project teams to deliver projects on time and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and budgets for house building projects, ensuring accuracy and adherence to company standards.
  • Manage procurement processes, including tendering, supplier selection, and contract negotiation.
  • Administer contracts and manage variations, claims, and payments with clients and subcontractors.
  • Monitor project costs and provide regular financial reports to senior management to support decision-making.
  • Identify and mitigate commercial risks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with design and site teams to optimise cost efficiency and value engineering opportunities.
  • Lead and mentor junior quantity surveyors and support the continuous development of the commercial team.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant statutory requirements, company policies, and industry best practise.
  • Engage with stakeholders to maintain strong working relationships and promote the company’s commercial interests.

Required Qualifications and Education

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or an equivalent qualification.
  • Valid full driving licence.

Experience

  • Proven experience in quantity surveying within the house building or residential construction sector.
  • Demonstrable track record of handling commercial management duties on medium to large-scale projects.
  • Experience in contract administration, procurement, and cost control.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and costs associated with house building.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
  • Ability to analyse financial information and produce detailed reports.
  • Proficiency in commercial and cost management software.
  • Organised, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Membership of a recognised professional body such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is advantageous.
  • Experience of managing a commercial team or mentoring junior staff.

Working Conditions

  • Office-based with regular visits to construction sites within the Nottinghamshire and wider East Midlands region.
  • Full-time hours, typically Monday to Friday, with occasional flexibility required to meet project deadlines.
  • Use of a company vehicle or car allowance provided for travel between sites.
