We’re pleased to present the opportunity to join Urenco as an Electrical Distribution Engineer. Based within UUK at our Capenhurst site, you’ll play a key role, within a growing team where you’ll take on responsibility and ownership of aspects of the electrical distribution network across a vast, complex 24/7 estate, including back up power supply.

The electrical distribution team is responsible for ensuring that electrical distribution related equipment is maintained and operated to ensure safety and statutory compliance. The team strives toward a culture of continuous improvement whilst operating in an environment that complies with all health, safety, security and regulatory requirements.
The role of the Electrical Distribution Engineer is to control, perform and supervise maintenance work on the site electrical distribution network and its ancillary components (inclusive of repair, switching and modification), whilst providing technical support and monitoring progress against agreed maintenance plans. They will develop supplier relationships and build business cases to support change, whilst offering the operational and maintenance support to business. They will have operational responsibilities to ensure that all equipment is operated and worked on in accordance with UUK Electrical Safety Rules. They will also be responsible for any engineering improvement opportunities and asset management of the equipment operated and maintained by the team.

What will your day look like? (4-6 bullet pointed list of key responsibilities)

• Manage the electrical distribution assets by ensuring maintenance activities are completed in accordance with company instructions and agreed maintenance plans, by providing technical advice and support to the Maintenance Technicians in order to achieve the goals of the department.
• Monitor the asset condition, identify risks and implement change to mitigate against the findings whilst carrying out safe and efficient operation of the electrical distribution to suitably meet business need.
• Support the maintenance technicians to ensure the progress of maintenance is in line with the agreed maintenance plan
• Manage and supervise the maintenance work to ensure it is completed in accordance with UUK’s company instructions and contract key performance indicators
• Must apply professional electrical operational experience, skills and leadership and manage the UUK electrical distribution systems, network and equipment in accordance with relevant UK legislation, codes and standards and Regulatory expectations
• Undertake the duties of the Authorised Person (Electrical) when the department workload demands and set people to work on electrical distribution systems
• Create justifications to give confidence in network configuration dependant on customer and business need
• Intelligent Customer on matters relating to the site’s 132kV system configuration, management and maintenance by National Grid on the UUK owned network
• Intelligent Customer on matters relating to the HV maintenance services provided by external contractors
• Ensuring that service providers contracts are managed and that when on site, they are supervised by a contract supervisor and have intelligent customer oversight
• Full lifecycle asset management; Responsible for monitoring overall asset health and lifetime management of the system (including obsolescence)


What do you need to be great at this role? (4-6 bullet pointed list covering skills, experience and qualifications – thinking about inclusion in this section, don’t exclude through overly extensive list of criteria)

- Candidates should have a background within electrical engineering, or EC&I with a strong electrical element. Hands on experience within a site environment is highly desirable. Candidates who have worked within an industry or environment where electrical distribution systems operate on a 24/7 basis would be ideal, as would Experience working with or for DNOs.
- Experience working with HV (132kv) to LV (415v).
- Candidates will be expected to take on responsibility or ownership of various assets across the estate, which consists of 20 substations, so evidence of taking on ownership of complex projects is desirable.
- Familiarity and ability to follow and update technical documentation requirements, drawing, working instructions, permits and procedures to ensure standards are met within in a highly regulated environment.
- Strong adherence and respect for electrical safety culture, rules and procedures and strong background knowledge of industry standards and best practice.
- Good overall knowledge of areas such as: Knowledge of electrical system protection schemes and fault energy management, experience of switch gear operation, characteristics and failure modes, knowledge of diesel generator and DRUPS operation and protection systems, experience of UPS and battery systems, knowledge of Substation earthing and lighting protection, good overall understanding of arc flash hazard and risk, the precautions and relevant legislation
